The 10th Texas Cavalry Regiment was mustered into service in October 1861. At the beginning of the Civil War the 10th served west of the Mississippi River, but in April 1862 the unit was sent east, where it served for the rest of the war. At this time, the unit totaled 565 effectives in the field. The Tenth Texas’ helped defend Corinth, Mississippi, and then fought in battles in Kentucky. The 10th served with the Army of Tennessee, including the Battle of Chickamauga, seige of Chattanooga and the capture of Missionary Ridge. It fought with Sherman’s forces in the Meridian campaign and the Battle of Atlanta, and then served under General Hood in operations in North Georgia and Alabama until the end of the war.
